today's notes (3)

9.24 uur. op de dijk met seneca en mary oliver.
het is zondagmorgen en dus nog rustig. dat was het in het dorp ook maar ik moest er uit. normaal loop ik nu maar het is al te warm, en er staat nauwelijks wind. 

(het licht zo anders in de ochtend. alsof nog onbekend terrein.) 

ik vraag me af wat mary oliver van dit polderlandschap zou vinden. dat dacht ik van de week ook al over emily brontë, zij zou het haten bedacht ik—

{4.38 uur. lezen over emily brontë = nadenken over landschap 
van de week liep ik mijn dagelijkse kilometers & vroeg me af wat emily zou maken van dit landschap waarin ik opgroeide, en momenteel weer beweeg/ leef. 
gisteravond las ik emily brontë's indruk van het platte belgische landschap:

looking out of the coach window during the day-long journey from ostend to brussels, emily did not possess her sister's rose-hued vision. she saw the belgian terrain for what it was: domesticated, tilled, flat, carved-up and cultivated. every field, every fence post, every clod of earth bore the impress of man and the banishment of Nature: it was all 'bare, flat, and treeless . . . slimy canals crept, like half-torpid snakes, beside the road; and formal pollard willows edged level fields, tilled like kitchen garden beds.' (p159 van katherine franks emily brontë. a chainless soul) (achteraf blijkt dit een passage uit charlotte brontë's villette te zijn, niet (zoals ik dacht) een directe quote uit een brief van emily brontë—ofwel een interpretatie van de biograaf. een begrijpelijke interpretatie desalniettemin.)

het polderlandschap is nog erger.
't enige wilde hier per ongeluk, of te vinden boven de lijn van de horizon.}

& dat klopt wel ongeveer, ik kwam gisteren in de biografie een beschrijving tegen van haar reactie op het belgische platteland—en dat was honderdtachtig jaar geleden. afzichtelijk, vond ze het.

mary oliver was een ander mens, had een ander karakter—ze zag overal natuur, kon awe opbrengen voor de meest ellendige plekken—maar ook zij hield 't meest van wild. & dat is hier nauwelijks-niet. (tenzij, natuurlijk, je klein kunt kijken.)

mogelijk is dit niet de juiste manier om over landschap te denken, ondanks alles maakt dit gebied net zo hard deel uit van alles, het geheel, als haar zee, & mangroves in florida—ookal is dit polderlandschap per definitie man made. (maar als mens natuur is, ...)

de wolken die ik van over het ijsselmeer naar hier toe zie komen (de wind uit het zuidwesten) komen waarvandaan? 

de gierzwaluwen zijn afgedaald. (of slapen ze niet boven?)
vlak langs en over. aren't they supposed to be shy birds? 

each part is of the world (mary oliver in 't essay 'flow')

de wind brengt grijze sluier. nog ver weg maar het komt. is daar de noordzee? of hangt het al boven noord-holland?

what does it mean (..) that the earth is so beautiful? and what shall I do about it? what is the gift that I should bring to the world? what is the life that I should live? (wederom, 'flow')

er liggen, trekken schaduwen op/ over het meer.

boterbloemen duizendblad distel
allerlei soorten gras—raaigras (engels en frans), gewoon struisgras, veldbeemdgras, ruw beemdgras, kropaar, timotheegras, gestreepte witbol
lieveheersbeestjes
een spinnenweb vol met de kleinste vliegjes, maar verlaten 

een vlucht duiven. lichtgevend, zacht grijs van kleur.

beneden voor de dijk stroken verlaten land: restjes ongebruikt terrein rondom windmolens en zonnepanelen. (een aantal weken geleden plotseling een klonk & een traag naar beneden vallende meeuw, alsof zinkend, alsof sereen: de wind bleef een van de dode vleugels dragen.) 
verlaten en dus onkruidig: enorme struiken kaasjeskruid en honingklaver.

steeds meer bootjes op het meer. (driemaster, alle zeilen in werking.)
de wind lijkt naar het westen te draaien, wellicht zelfs noordwest? misschien via het noorden naar het oosten, zoals vorige week; er komen weer warme dagen aan.

10.32 uur. steeds een beetje meer wind. definitely moving towards NW. 

ik plet allerlei insecten & i don't like it.

terror is god's son to awe

how we perceive it 

death as change in plaats van a cessation
(cessation = the fact or process of ending or being brought to an end)

ecstasy vs. emptiness. (attitude.)

i want to keep it forever. (ze heeft het over momenten. dat haar poëzie niet over haar gaat maar over ervaringen die ze wil bewaren, & de 'i' being the reader: to be able to enter the moment.)

i want to become my ideas. / be my ideas.

coleman barks over de frase 'consider the lilies' en het belang ervan voor oliver: to try to be that trusting so that you don't give a thought for the future, you don't toil neither do you spin.

oliver: not passive in the sense of inert, but passive in the sense of willing.

bladeren in mary ruefle's madness, rack, and honey = lezen in madness, rack, and honey. nu het essay ‘my emily dickinson’ omdat ik vanmorgen moest denken aan woorden waarmee ruefle haar tekst begint, omdat ik ergens over schreef en deze passage me te binnen schoot (& ook omdat het een prachtig essay is):

from first to last, there is no evidence that she laid any plans for the course of her life. she seems, above all, to have wished to avoid ‘doing something about’ her life, and when, from time to time, the obligation was put to her, to make some sort of career for herself, and so prepare for her future, she tried to meet these demands, and failed. (muriel spark, in het boek emily brontë: her life and work)

all the while she was getting dressed she felt [the] poems standing upright all over the room. she even kept an eye on them in her dressing table mirror, lest they escape into their natural vertical scent. p147 (j.d. salinger in ‘the inverted forest’; helaas niet opgenomen in zijn nine stories, nergens in opgenomen schijnt.) (heb al tijdenlang niets meer van salinger gelezen, should reread.)

emily dickinson oft looked out of her bedroom window, and many of her poems, if not her world view, seem framed by this fact; so much has been made of this there is little i can add; to argue whether a window is the emblem of complete objectivity (removal and distance) or complete subjectivity (framing and viewpoint) is an argument without end, for every window has two sides, and they are subsumed in the window the way yearning, a subsidiary of the window, is subsumed in both the object yearned for, and the subject of its own activity. p150-151

i'd like to propose the idea that emily [b]'s ultimate window was the sky itself, immense expanse, the one that fueled her and that she seemed to see through and beyond. p151

alsof neergelegd door een kind maar dit is van de wind.

de afwezigheid van leestekens in (thomas a.) clarke's poëzie bevalt me—lucht in het gedicht of ruimte (zoals de landschappen waarin hij (/ de lezer) beweegt). het biedt oneindigheid; gevoel, mogelijkheid, betekenis. 

(i like the word opschrijven, de aanwezigheid van op maakt het woord tactiel (/ beeldend).)
